The Concept of Shakti: Hinduism as a Liberating Force for Women

The intricate dynamics of power   and gender has grown to become an increasingly important topic within the   realm of present day academia – and justifiably so. Though representing half   of the human race, women’s voices, needs and inner psyches have, traditionally,   been relegated to a place of unimportance in the history of the Western   world. Throughout the history of European civilization, the nature of the   feminine was misunderstood, neglected and, in some cases, practically   demonized. Consequently, for millennia women have been deprived of the power   – political, economic, spiritual, even sexual – which men so take for   granted. …

Karma: A Principle of Radical Freedom

Karma: A Principle of Radical Freedom • Since the popularization of the term “karma” in the Western world from the 1960s to the present day, this important metaphysical and ethical concept has, unfortunately, been understood in only the most simplistic and cursory of manners by the majority of Europeans and Americans – including by scholars, by most self-professed spiritual teachers, as well as by many common spiritual practitioners. Many followers of New Age and pop spirituality have an even more speculative understanding of karma, believing that the concept of karma is somehow tied to the idea of fate or predetermination. As we will see, the concept of karma in no …

The Palace On Wheels Train

The Palace on Wheels is luxury at its best. It is a luxury tourist train. It was launched by the Indian Railways & Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation to promote tourism in Rajasthan. The concept of the Palace on Wheels was derived from the royal background of the coaches, which were originally meant to be the personal railway coaches of the erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. Each saloon highlights the cultural ethos of the state, represented through the use of furniture, handicrafts, painting and furnishings. Delhi-based interior designer Monica Khanna did the interiors of the train. There …

The Logic of Rebirth in Hinduism

Hinduism philosophy states that a soul reincarnates through births again and again until it becomes perfect suitable to reunite with its Source. During this process, the soul enters into many bodies, assumes many forms, and passes through many births and rebirths. This concept is summarily described in the following verse of the Bhagavad gita:   “Just as a man discards worn out clothes and puts on new clothes, the soul discards worn out bodies and wears new ones.” (2.22) The Hindu concept of reincarnation is based upon the logical notion that life on earth did not emerge suddenly, but evolved gradually, involving great epochs of time and a vast multitude …
